TL;DR
  • Several Pixel owners are reporting unusually low microphone volume when recording audio/video natively or via certain apps.
  • Similar complaints date back to 2024 and span multiple Pixel generations, including the latest Pixel 10 series.
  • Google appears to be aware of the complaints but hasn’t publicly acknowledged a widespread issue, and there’s no confirmed fix yet.

Apart from offering one of the best software experiences in the Android smartphone ecosystem, Google’s Pixel line is also known for its impressive camera capabilities. However, what good is a high-res video recording if you can barely hear anything when you play it back? That’s exactly the frustration that a lot of Pixel owners are (and have been) dealing with.

This isn’t a brand new issue, but it is resurfacing now. Reports about Pixel microphones recording audio that’s too quiet to hear can be traced back to 2024, and similar microphone problems appear to have continued to plague users since.

A Reddit post from earlier today highlights the problem on a Pixel 10. According to the user, their phone captures audio normally when recording through the default camera app. However, recordings via third-party apps like Snapchat, WhatsApp, and Instagram have extremely quiet audio. “I’ve already tried clearing app caches, reinstalling those apps, checking permissions, toggling the system microphone access, rebooting, and updating everything. None of that fixed it,” wrote the user.

Older reports have surfaced similar snags, albeit with some differences. A Google support post from June highlights a problem where audio recorded via the Pixel 10 Pro XL’s native camera or “messenger” comes through too quiet. The same isn’t the case when they’re speaking to someone over the phone. Considering that Pixels have three microphones, the issue in this specific case could be explained by a faulty mic used to capture audio during recordings, while the mic used for calls works normally. However, that still doesn’t explain all the other reports.

One from earlier in the year similarly pointed out that audio recorded via the Pixel 10 is too quiet, and that other media and videos play at a normal volume, so it’s definitely not a speaker flaw. The user reports that they ensured none of the mics were covered by removing the case and holding their Pixel 10 by the edges, but the issue persisted. They eventually contacted Google Support and were offered an advanced warranty replacement. The support agent reportedly acknowledged seeing reports about this concern from other users, while the official PixelCommunity Reddit account replied to the OP, suggesting that Google is at least aware of the issue, even though it hasn’t publicly acknowledged it.

For what it’s worth, the complaints aren’t exclusive to the Pixel 10 series. An older report from 2024 highlights a similar issue on a Pixel 9 Pro XL, with subsequent comments highlighting similar microphone problems on the Pixel 9 Pro, and the Pixel 9 Pro. “I think I had the same problem on my Pixel 6 too but my 7 & 8 were ok. I hope it’s a software thing because my mic sounds pretty good on any other app,” wrote one of the users at the time. I have a Pixel 8, and I haven’t been able to replicate the issue.

At this point, it’s uncertain whether all these complaints stem from a singular underlying issue or if there could be multiple forces at play. There also seems to be no universal fix. We’ve reached out to Google for comment and will update this article if we hear back. Hopefully this brings more attention to these reports.
