  • Google Play Services v26.38.30 contains strings suggesting Motion Assist may soon integrate directly with Pixel’s Transit mode.
  • The integration will seemingly allow Pixel phones to automatically activate anti-motion-sickness visual cues, possibly using schedule and location data rather than relying solely on motion detection.
  • Users will likely receive a specific notification informing them that Transit mode has activated Motion Assist, so they are not surprised by moving dots on their screen.

Google recently began rolling out Motion Assist to phones beyond the Pixel, but it seems the company still has more in store for Pixel users, possibly in the form of tighter integration with Pixel’s Transit mode. Evidence spotted in the latest Google Play Services update suggests that your Pixel may soon automatically enable anti-motion-sickness visual cues the moment your phone detects you are commuting, sparing you from digging through quick settings every time you hop on a bus or train.

We spotted strings within Google Play Services v26.38.30 that suggest Google could be looking to link Motion Assist with Transit mode:

Code
<string name="motion_sickness_notification_title_transit_mode">Motion assist activated by transit mode</string>

The notification could alert users that Motion Assist was activated on their phone by Transit mode, so they aren’t startled when animated motion cues unexpectedly appear on their display mid-ride.

For those unfamiliar, Google’s Motion Assist feature is designed to mitigate nausea caused by staring at a screen while in a moving vehicle. It renders subtle animated dots along the edges of the display that move in real time with your vehicle’s momentum, counteracting the sensory mismatch between your eyes and your inner ear.

While Motion Assist already supports automatic vehicle motion detection, Google notes on its support pages that your device might not consistently detect when you are on the move.

That’s where Pixel’s Transit mode could come into play. Transit mode relies on contextual signals such as transit schedules and location data to adapt notification settings and manage commute cards. Tying Motion Assist directly to Transit mode gives Pixel phones a secondary and reliable trigger.

Google hasn’t officially announced this feature pairing yet, but given its presence in Play Services, it could roll out to Pixel devices in an upcoming feature drop or Play system update. We’ll keep you updated when we learn more.
