Add Android Authority on Google:
TL;DR
  • Google is rolling out a redesigned search bar in the Google app.
  • It now has a “plus” icon to upload images or files, create images with Nano Banana, or switch models for the AI Mode.
  • The Search Live and Nano Banana buttons are also properly labeled now.

Google has been making several UI changes to its apps of late. We’ve spotted it working on changes in the Phone app, a redesign of pinned chats in Messages, and a redesigned settings page for the Google app. However, while those features are still in development, another UI tweak seems to be rolling out.

You’re reading an Authority Insights story. Authority Insights brings you all the latest exclusive reports, app teardowns, leaks, and in-depth tech coverage from the Android Authority team that you won’t find anywhere else.

The latest version of the Google app introduces changes to the search bar on the app’s home page. First, the search bar itself is now slightly slimmer, with a white background and a subtle border with a shadow effect. It also has a “plus” icon on the left side to attach images and files, create new images with Nano Banana, or switch models for the AI Mode.

Alongside the redesigned search bar, the app adds labels for the Nano Banana and Search Live buttons that sit below the search bar itself. The Nano Banana button is labeled “Create,” while the Search Live button is labeled “Talk.”

It’s worth noting that the app has always allowed users to upload an image or file using the plus icon that showed up after tapping the main search bar on the home page. That option is still available. However, the redesign makes it easier to upload images or files by removing one step from this process. It could also make it clearer to users who may not have known that they could add attachments in the first place.

The new search bar design and button labels seem to be rolling out with v17.65.17 of the Google app. We checked several of our test devices, and they’re all showing the new design with the latest Google app update, so this could be rolling out widely. However, Google’s rollouts are often unpredictable. If you’re not seeing the redesigned search bar, you’ll just have to wait for the update to land on your device.
