Google Reminders could be sunsetted soon
- An APK teardown suggests Google could soon sunset Google Reminders.
- It appears Google Tasks would take the place of Reminders.
- It’s unclear when or how this will transition would begin.
For the forgetful, smartphone reminders can be the difference between keeping a job and losing it. Using various apps, some folks have reminders for pretty much everything, from brushing teeth to starting the dishwasher to turning in a quarterly report.
If you’re one of these folks and relying on Google Reminders, some big changes could be on the way. According to an APK teardown by 9to5Google, Google could begin sunsetting Reminders quite soon.
9to5Google tore down Google Calendar 2022.24.0.x — a version that hasn’t yet been widely released. In the app’s code, the team found references to the end of Reminders.
Apparently, a notification could pop up soon when you open Calendar. It would say “Reminders are now Tasks.” Then, another alert would further explain the change:
Use Tasks to get notified about your to-dos and keep track of them wherever you are in Google Workspace.
Theoretically, Google would transfer your current reminders to the new Tasks protocol. Then, when going to create a reminder, you’d find the ability to be gone with the Tasks service taking its place.
That is all hypothetical at the moment. However, we know for certain that Google has removed the Reminders service from Assistant. It’s inevitable that Google will sunset the entire service at some point. When that would occur and how it would look will likely be divulged in the coming weeks.
