Google recently announced a new initiative to make searching for information within video content more streamlined. Effective immediately, users can use Google to search for key moments in YouTube videos to more easily find the information they are looking for.

Google Video Search

That means when you search for instructional or informative videos, Google will provide links to moments that relate to your questions the most. This makes scrubbing through a video more like skimming an article, allowing the user to quickly jump to the relevant moments.

Google also claims this functionality will make video content more accessible to people who use screen readers. This makes sense since finding important information will be quicker and require less time navigating the UI.

Content creators need to provide timestamps to those moments ahead of time in order for users to take advantage of this. If they aren’t timestamped, users will need to scrub through videos like they always have. Hopefully, in the future, Google will add in a dash of AI magic to allow users to search any video for relevant information.

As of right now, these search results are only available for YouTube videos in English. But Google is providing tools to help content creators timestamp their videos on other platforms and websites. It’s only a matter of time before we see this functionality roll out all across the web.
