Google Translate's massive redesign is rolling out now
Oct 16, 2026 — 7:14 AM ET

- The extensive Google Translate redesign we first spotted in July is now rolling out.
- While most elements have been retained, the new redesign includes a couple of key changes compared to the July redesign.
- We’re seeing the refreshed UI on a couple of our Android phones, but it’s not widely available yet.
The Google Translate app for Android is gearing up for a big redesign, as we first reported in July. It’s been over three months since we made that discovery, and it appears that Google is finally rolling out the updated design elements.
We’re now seeing this overhaul of the Google Translate UI on a couple of our devices, both running version 10.39.34.99. However, it’s not yet available on all our devices, so it appears to be a phased rollout. With this revamp, the bottom bar looks similar to the one on apps like Google Photos and Lens.
However, one key difference is immediately noticeable, as you can see in the gallery above. The initial redesign we spotted featured a smaller text field between the language selector and the bottom bar. This card has grown significantly larger with the version rolling out now.
This change also removes the three-dot button, which previously contained the translation model selector and a handwriting option. The latter is now available directly in the text box, next to a slightly modified microphone icon, with Paste moving to the left.
Unfortunately, the large text box leaves insufficient space for contextual shortcuts (Today’s Spanish Practice, Jump back into conversation).
We’re not seeing major changes on the other pages of the app, including Live, Camera, and Practice (which remains in beta). This redesign uses a prominent blue shade throughout the app, similar to the Google Play Store.
Some of these design elements align with Material 3 Expressive elements. Sure, it’s not perfect, but it has certainly given the Translate app a much-needed glow-up.
