Your Googlebook won't lose some of its best AI features even after your free AI Pro plan ends

Google is putting AI front and center with its first wave of Googlebooks, from Magic Pointer, which turns the humble cursor into a Gemini tool, to Rambler, which cleans up your rambling voice notes. There’s just one potential catch: every Googlebook also comes with a free year of Google AI Pro, which raises an obvious question about what happens to those headline AI features once the freebie runs out. Thankfully, Google has now confirmed that some of the best ones aren’t going anywhere.

Speaking on the Android Faithful podcast, Alexander Kuscher, Google’s Senior Director of Product for Laptops and Tablets, clarified what owners can expect once that 12-month Google AI Pro benefit expires.

At the 1:08:09 mark, Kuscher specifically confirmed that Magic Pointer and Rambler will work without an AI Pro subscription. He described the bundled year of AI Pro as something that sits “on top” of the standard Googlebook experience, rather than something required to keep its core features working.

That’s an important distinction considering how heavily Google has leaned on AI to sell its new laptops. Magic Pointer is one of the platform’s signature features, letting you wiggle the cursor and bring Gemini into whatever you’re looking at on screen. Rambler, meanwhile, brings the smarter voice-typing approach we’ve seen on the Pixel 11 to the laptop.

Like Pixels, these software touches will be a big part of what separates Googlebooks from more traditional laptops. And since the price starts at $899 inclusive of a year of AI Pro, knowing the hardware won’t lose some of its defining features in month 13 makes that proposition easier to understand.

Kuscher didn’t account for each AI-powered Googlebook feature individually, so some extras may still require the AI Pro subscription. But Magic Pointer and Rambler, at least, appear to be part of the laptop you’re buying — not temporary perks waiting behind a future paywall.
