GrapheneOS just confirmed its first supported non-Pixel phone

For years, wanting GrapheneOS meant accepting one hardware choice: you needed a Google Pixel. Motorola’s partnership with the privacy-focused project promised to break that lock-in, but until now, we didn’t know which phone would go first. Following this week’s Signature 27 unveiling, GrapheneOS has answered that question directly: Motorola’s new flagship will be the first phone supported under the partnership.
The confirmation came after an X user asked whether the Signature 27 would support GrapheneOS. “Yes, that will be the initial supported phone. Wait for official news about it,” the project replied. That last sentence matters, since GrapheneOS has not yet announced when support will arrive or whether Motorola will offer the OS preinstalled.
Still, the choice makes sense. GrapheneOS previously explained what’s finally making Motorola support possible, noting that its first Motorola devices would be high-end flagships because Qualcomm’s top Snapdragon platforms currently provide the security features and long-term support it requires. The project has highlighted hardware memory tagging, stronger secure-element integration, and seven years of proper updates as key requirements.
The Signature 27 checks those boxes on paper. Motorola has equipped it with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and promised seven OS upgrades plus up to seven years of security updates. That lines up with GrapheneOS’s earlier roadmap, which pointed to a regular, non-folding flagship as the starting point before support expands to Motorola foldables.
The timing is especially interesting given GrapheneOS’s growing friction with Google. The project recently hit roadblocks bringing GrapheneOS to the Pixel 11 over MTE support. It has also criticized Google’s new manual process for accessing Pixel driver source code and accused the company of gatekeeping some Android 17 APIs and security fixes.
GrapheneOS is also preparing for life beyond Pixels on the software side. It is overhauling its Messaging app and planning native RCS support to reduce dependence on Google Messages, replacing aging AOSP apps, and rolling out privacy features such as secure paste.
So for anyone waiting for a serious non-Pixel GrapheneOS phone, the mystery is finally over. The Signature 27 is first in line.
