How to turn an iPad on or off — as in all the way, not just bring it in and out of sleep — is certainly a basic skill, but something everyone needs to learn at some point. Here’s what to do for any particular iPad model.

QUICK ANSWER

Turn on any iPad by holding down its top button (a.k.a. the sleep/wake button) until an Apple logo appears onscreen. iPads without a home button can be turned off by holding the sleep/wake button as well as one of the volume buttons, then dragging a slider. If your iPad does have a home button, just hold sleep/wake until the slider appears.

How to turn on your iPad

Step 3: Press and hold the Power button.

When it’s completely powered down, any iPad model can be turned back on by holding the top button (a.k.a. the sleep/wake button) until an Apple logo appears onscreen. This can take several seconds. If it’s taking any more than 10, you may need to recharge your device first, or follow the troubleshooting link at the end of this guide.

How to turn off your iPad

This varies based on whether or not your iPad has a front-facing home button, which most recent iPads don’t, particularly if they’re a Pro or an Air.

If your iPad doesn’t have a home button:

  • Simultaneously hold the sleep/wake button as well as one of the volume buttons (as seen in the photo above).
  • Swipe the power-off slider when it appears.

If your iPad does have a home button:

  • Hold the sleep/wake button until a slider appears onscreen.
  • Swipe the slider to shut down.

With most recent iPads, which lack a home button, do the following:

  • Quick-tap the volume-up button (closest to the sleep/wake button).
  • Quick-tap volume-down.
  • Press and hold the sleep/wake button until you see an Apple logo onscreen.

If your iPad does have a home button:

  • Press and hold the home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously.
  • Release when an Apple logo appears onscreen.
