HTC's metaverse smartphone finally has a reveal date
- HTC has announced a June 28 launch event.
- The event poster shows a smartphone, complete with I/O options.
- The company is expected to launch its “metaverse” smartphone on the day.
HTC confirmed earlier this year that it was planning to launch a “metaverse phone,” ostensibly focusing on augmented and virtual reality applications. The device was delayed due to supply chain constraints, but it looks like the company is finally ready for a launch.
The Taiwanese brand announced a June 28 ‘Log In To The Future’ event on its Facebook and Twitter pages, complete with Viverse branding. Viverse is HTC’s ecosystem of AR/VR/XR products and services.
HTC didn’t explicitly confirm that this is a smartphone launch, but the accompanying poster indeed references a smartphone. We can even make out volume buttons on the right side, an indentation (presumably for a fingerprint scanner) on the left, and what might be a 3.5mm port at the top. Check it out below.
There’s no word on specs just yet, although 2018’s blockchain-focused Exodus 1 phone was a flagship-tier offering. That device offered a Snapdragon 845 SoC, QHD+ LCD screen, and an IP68 rating. So hopefully we see a similarly premium offering with the new device.
The new smartphone will presumably be loaded with HTC’s Vive VR and AR apps too given the Viverse branding. So those who were dismayed by Google and Samsung abandoning their mobile VR efforts might want to check back on June 28.
