HTC smartphone president Chialin Chang resigns

HTC’s President of Smartphone and Connected Devices Business, Chialin Chang, has resigned. HTCannounced the move on its investors page earlier today and it’s effective immediately, though Chang’s successor is yet to be named.
Chang joined HTCas its Chief Financial Officer in 2012 before becoming the smartphone and connected devices president in 2016. HTC’s website lists Chang’s reason for leaving as “personal career path,” while reports suggest he plans to launch an AI startup later this year.
HTC has fallen on hard times recently; its 2017 revenues were the lowest they’d been in 13 years, and only last week the company reported a year-on-year revenue decline of 27% from January 2016 to 2017.
HTC’s future smartphone prospects also look bleak as Google recently acquired 2,000 members of its R&D staff (and access to some of its patents) in a $1.1 billion deal.
In a statement to Engadget on the matter, HTCsaid:
We can confirm Chialin Chang has resigned from his position as President of the Smartphone and Connected Devices Business at HTC. We thank him for his dedication to the company for the last six years and wish him well in his future endeavors.
