HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro tipped to have bonkers 7680fps recording

We’re only two days away from the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro launch, but we’ve already seen a ton of renders and leaks. Now, the latest leak has revealed more supposed details regarding the phone’s camera setup and super slow-mo capabilities.

Chinese-language news outlet ITHome (h/t: XDA-Developers) posted a photo of a demo stand apparently set to be used in conjunction with the Mate 30 Pro. The stand seems to highlight a few prominent features.

Unarguably the most noteworthy feature here is the mention of 7,680fps video recording, which is a ridiculous eight times slower than 960fps slow-motion recording currently seen on Sony and Samsung‘s flagships. Current 960fps clips are already pretty fantastic when conditions are ideal, revealing unseen motion in a variety of scenarios. But going even slower than that is a very interesting move.

How could they even pull this off?

Native 960fps technology requires super-fast, dedicated memory (DRAM) on the camera sensor itself to capture all those frames. But the likes of Xiaomi, Realme, and Huawei use interpolation to achieve this frame-rate, essentially inserting duplicate frames into a lower frame-rate video.

The net result of this practice is that you technically have a 960fps video clip, albeit with half or more of the frames being duplicates. This generally results in lower quality super slow-mo compared to a native 960fps clip, owing to blur and ghosting artifacts.

It’s unclear whether HUAWEI is using a ton of dedicated memory on the Mate 30 Pro’s camera sensor to capture 7,680fps video (if this feature is actually coming), or if it’s merely interpolating 120fps or 240fps to reach this ridiculous frame-rate. It’s also possible that HUAWEI is using a camera sensor with embedded DRAM to reach 960fps, and then interpolating to 7,680fps.

Either way, interpolating from a higher frame-rate video should give better results, in the same way that upscaling to 4K from a 1440p video should give better results than upscaling from a 480p video.

What else did the demo stand show us?

The demo stand posted by ITHome also tells us that the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro will pack two 40MP rear cameras (primary and ultra-wide), an 8MP telephoto sensor, and a 3D depth camera. There are also suggestions of an “ultra high definition night” camera, which is likely referencing the night mode and/or HUAWEI’s RYYB camera sensor.

We also get a look at apparent battery details, with the phone tipped to feature a 4,500mAh battery with 40W wired charging and 27W wireless charging. For what it’s worth, the battery and camera details all seem to line up with recent leaks.

The stand notes that the phone will be powered by the Kirin 990 chipset, but HUAWEI generally debuts a new Kirin processor in its Mate series anyway.
