HUAWEI proves it doesn't need US 5G components to stay on top
HUAWEI is already the leader in 5G deployment, shipping more than 200,000 5G-enabled base stations worldwide. Now, HUAWEI CEO Ren Zhengfei says the company is producing its 5G base stations without US components.
According to Reuters, HUAWEI plans to more than double its current production in 2020. In October, HUAWEI’s base station production will be up to 5,000 devices per month. Ren says the company will have produced approximately 1.5 million stations by the end of next year.
So far, the US trade ban hasn’t seemed to slow the company down all that much. Despite the latest Mate 30 line of devices launching without Google services, HUAWEI has been showing what the world’s largest telecoms manufacturer is capable of without US resources.
HUAWEI President of Corporate Strategy Will Zhang says the only reason the company wants to use US parts again is because of its “emotional ties” to US suppliers. Shifting base station production to exclude US parts hasn’t negatively impacted the company thus far.

The company hasn’t lost much rapport despite the Trump administration’s suspicion of the Chinese government potentially using HUAWEI to spy on people worldwide. To combat what suspicion there is, Ren previously said he was open to selling patents, code, technical blueprints, and production insight to interested parties so they can evaluate device security. The company is even open to buyers modifying the source code to address back door concerns.
It’s been four months since the government banned US entities from doing business with HUAWEI. Only time will tell if the company’s continued sans-US success will influence the trade ban moving forward.
