Typing on the latest Kindle Scribe is getting a lot more effortless
Oct 8, 2026 — 5:58 AM ET

- The latest Amazon Kindle Scribe models are now getting a voice typing feature.
- Older Kindle Scribe models are also getting support for Sticky Notes outside of the Kindle library.
- Some other Kindle models are also getting performance improvements.
Slow-refreshing e-reader displays can make typing on them quite jarring. But Amazon is rolling out a new update for certain devices that can improve the typing experience, just weeks after revealing new colorful models.
Amazon is pushing a new software update, version 5.20.1, to many Kindle devices launched since 2024. According to the release notes, this update broadly brings “Performance improvements, bug fixes, and other general enhancements.” However, a select few models are getting something extra, especially the latest generation of the Kindle Scribe.
The Kindle Scribe (3rd Gen), Scribe Colorsoft, and Scribe (without front light) are getting the option to type using voice. With this, users can tap the microphone icon on the keyboard and use their voice to dictate while searching for a book, a personal note, or attaching an annotation. The option is missing for the Scribe’s previous generations.
However, older Kindle models, including the 1st-Gen and 2nd-Gen Kindle Scribe, are getting another feature, and it has to do with Sticky Notes. With this version, owners of the older Scribe devices can add handwritten Sticky Notes to any fixed-layout ebook or other personal documents. Previously, this feature was limited to titles in your Kindle library.
Meanwhile, Kindle Colorsoft, Kindle Paperwhite (12th Gen, 2024), and Kindle (11th Gen, 2024) are the devices receiving performance improvements. Meanwhile, Good E-Reader also notes that the latest update brings support for the Kindle Click wireless page turner to older models, even though the official changelog doesn’t mention it.
