Get your retro gaming fix with Knights of Tartarus from Crescent Moon Games
With all the news about the latest and greatest games coming out of E3 this week, we wanted to feature something for the retro gamers out there. For fans of classic NES or Game Boy Color RPGs, Knights of Tartarus is just what the doctor ordered.
Released on Steam a while back, Knights of Tartarus promises 20+ hours of nostalgia-filled gameplay. In it, you dive into the underworld to defeat an order of monster knights and save the world. But you’d better be quick, or your rival will save the world first.
Gameplay is a mix of vintage turn-based combat and open world exploration. Many bosses are non-linear, meaning you can fight them out of order if you’re strong enough. As you level up, you can choose skills from one of four classes, each with unique benefits. Difficulty can spike up quickly, and just like the old days there is no solution other than grinding out a few levels and trying again.
Combat might be similar to Pokémon, but the open world part of the game looks and plays a lot like the original Legend of Zelda game on the NES, with puzzles to solve and treasures to find. Even the on-screen controls mimic an early Nintendo controller, with the start and select buttons moved above the buttons to suit smartphone screens.
The soundtrack also sounds like it was ripped right out of the 8-bit era. This is the closest you can get to an emulated NES or Game Boy game without dipping into questionable legal territory.
It’s clear that Knights of Tartarus is a labor of love, which is impressive considering it was developed by just one person, Stello Hexis. Click the button below to download it now from the Google Play Store!
