Korea's Galaxy S5 Broadband Lte-A handset updated to Lollipop

Flashback to March 2014 and chances are that at least some of you will recall shades of jade at Samsung’s failure to announce a so-called “Galaxy S5 Prime”, the QHD, all-metal masterpiece that was rumored to no end, yet never materialized. What South Korea did get however, was the SM-G906Galaxy S5 Broadband Lte-A handset, which basically consisted of the S5 with a QHD SAMOLED display, the Snapdragon 805 and an upgrade to Category 6 LTE speeds, with all models sporting a gold finish on their frame. (Interestingly enough, select European markets would also get this device minus the QHD display).

Some time after the original Korean Galaxy S5 was updated to Lollipop, the “Prime” variant is now receiving Android 5.0 as well. The software update allows for things such as a revised lock screen with notification cards, longer battery life, and the addition of several Material Design elements to the TouchWiz build running on the device. As of this writing, all three South Korean variants are said to be receiving the update.

Given how 2014’s flagship is but one year old, we highly expect it to receive future updates down the line. Unfortunately, as is often the case, it is doubtful the new and refined UX present on the upcoming Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will be ported to the S5 family, although it would certainly be a welcome addition to those fans who are less-than-thrilled with the oft-discussed Samsung skin.
