LG to launch four new smartwatches and smartwatch payments system?
LG may be preparing to launch four new smartwatches and a smartwatch-based payments system, it has emerged. The Korean company recently filed for trademarks on the names LG Watch Style, LG Watch Force, LG Watch Pro, LG Watch Sole and LG Watch Pay, indicating that such products could be in the pipeline.
The trademark filings, discovered by Netherlands-based website GSMinfo, feature little information outside of the names themselves. However, under the “list of goods and services” category of the applications, LG Watch Pay is linked predominantly to mobile payments, while the rhetoric of the other four properties pertains to physical wearable products (see below).
LG announced that it would launch its own mobile payments system – like Samsung Pay, which is also smartwatch compatible – in October last year, but it has since seen several delays. A report from September 2016 suggests LG’s mobile payments system will now arrive in 2017.
LG also applied for trademarks around the time of the initial mobile payments announcement, including “LG-Play” and “LG G Pay”. Whether products with any of these names will eventually ship isn’t yet known.
