LG's bendable OLED gaming TV curves on demand
- LG Display has unveiled a bendable OLED gaming TV concept ahead of CES 2021.
- The 48-inch screen curves for immersion in games, and flattens for movies.
- It’s not certain if this will become a production model.
Curved TVs are great for games and other content that benefits from an immersive view, but they can be a pain when you’re just trying to catch up on your latest shows. You might not have to compromise in the future, though. LG Display has unveiled a prototype bendable OLED gaming TV that curves on demand.
LG’s 48-inch OLED is bendable to a 1,000R radius when you want that extra dash of immersion for games, but flattens for TV shows and other material where a curve could be distracting. Like other modern OLED screens, this panel is flicker-free, boasts virtually instantaneous response times and supports variable refresh rates up to 120Hz.
You wouldn’t even need speakers. The bendable OLED TV uses LG’s Cinematic Sound to produce audio by vibrating the display itself. Advances in technology have slimmed the display exciter behind the technology to just 0.02 inches thick — you might not even notice that it’s present.
The company will hold a virtual showcase for the set at CES 2021.
Whether or not you see a production version isn’t clear. LG Display has clearly designed the bendable OLED with practical considerations in mind, but it’s not a full-fledged TV product you can buy at this stage. It could be some time before LG or one of its panel customers turns this into a shipping device you can put in your living room. Instead, think of this as a peek at where TVs might go — your future set could change shape based on whatever you’re watching or playing.
