MediaTek Dimensity 9200 Plus launched: A Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy rival
- MediaTek has announced the Dimensity 9200 Plus chipset.
- This brings higher CPU and GPU clock speeds over the vanilla Dimensity 9200.
- Expect the first phones with this chipset later this month.
The Dimensity 9200 is MediaTek‘s top-end smartphone processor in 2023, taking the fight to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Now, the Taiwanese chipmaker has announced a mid-year refresh dubbed the Dimensity 9200 Plus.
True to previous mid-year upgrades, the Dimensity 9200 Plus is the same chipset but with clock speed upgrades to the CPU and GPU. In the case of the former, the Cortex-X3 big core now hits 3.35GHz (from 3.05GHz), while the Cortex-A715 medium cores now hit 3GHz (previously 2.85GHz). Those Cortex-A510 cores are still pegged at 1.8GHz. Either way, that 3.35GHz clock speed is almost identical to the 3.36GHz peak clock speed in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor.
MediaTek didn’t dish out a GPU clock speed at the time of the Dimensity 9200’s release, but it says that the Plus chipset’s GPU has received a 17% boost to clock speed. Otherwise, this is still the same Mali-G715 Immortalis MC11 GPU as before, complete with hardware-based ray tracing.
Dimensity 9200 Plus: What else does it offer?
The rest of the chipset is still the same as the standard Dimensity 9200. So that means you’re getting an M80-based modem with mmWave 5G support (7.9Gbps downlink), a sixth-generation APU, support for up to 240Hz refresh rate at FHD+ resolutions, 8K recording capabilities, Bluetooth 5.3, and Wi-Fi 7.
We thought the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 was a pretty powerful processor in our vivo X90 Pro review. The phone delivered competitive single-core CPU performance while duking it out with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 phones in terms of GPU performance. However, the vivo phone lagged behind when it came to multi-core CPU scores and GPU stress testing. We’re not sure if clock speed boosts will be enough to address these weaknesses, but it certainly looks like a significant upgrade for peak performance.
MediaTek says the first phones powered by the Dimensity 9200 Plus will arrive later this month. There’s no word on the availability of these devices, though. For what it’s worth, the vivo X90 Pro is the only Dimensity 9200 phone in global markets.
