You can now catch Mew in Pokémon Go, hints Niantic
- Mew, the most elusive Pokémon of all, is now apparently available to catch in Pokémon Go.
- Niantic hints that completing a new series of quests could net you a Mew, although the wording is kept deliberately vague.
- This is one of the few times Mew has been made available to catch in a Pokémon video game.
While the popularity of Pokémon Go has certainly dropped since it became a sensation in 2016, die-hard Pokémon fans are as obsessive as ever about the augmented reality smartphone game. Today, Niantic — the company behind Pokémon Go — released a semi-vague statement that seems to dish the news all Pokémon fans have been waiting for: Mew is out there in the world of Pokémon Go, and you can now find it.
Mew is one of the most elusive Pokémon creatures in the franchise. For a long time, the only way to legitimately catch a Mew in the video game series was to have the character specially downloaded into your game by Nintendo at Pokémon events. Up until now, Mew hasn’t been available at all in Pokémon Go, but Niantic is introducing a new quest system that supposedly could net you a Mew.
While the press release doesn’t outright say, “Follow these steps to catch a Mew,” Niantic describes two new quests that will get you a “Legendary Pokémon”: Field Research and Special Research. Achieving objectives laid out in each of the research fields nets you Stamps, and earning seven Stamps achieves a “research breakthrough” which may result in an encounter with a Mew.
Research tasks involve spinning nearby PokéStops, discovering and catching certain Pokémon, or engaging in battles. Some of these objectives are dished out by Professor Willow himself, the in-game character who gives you your first Poké Ball and gives you advice in the game.
