Minecraft will likely get the Pokémon Go treatment, tune in May 17

It was only a matter of time before Minecraft joined in on the fun of augmented reality as other mobile games have already, such as Pokémon Go. Now, according to a new teaser trailer from Microsoft, it appears a Minecraft AR game is imminent.

The video teaser, which you can see below, strongly hints that a Minecraft AR app or game will launch on May 17 at the game’s official site.

In the (very poorly green-screened) video, a man accidentally takes someone else’s smartphone with him when he leaves a park bench. The woman whose phone he took grabs his (likely a taped-over Samsung Galaxy S6 or S7) and notices that there are Minecraft characters both on the phone and suddenly in the real world. She peers at the device and sees the supposed launch date.

While the clearly low-budget teaser trailer fits in nicely with Minecraft’s low-graphics-quality aesthetic, it doesn’t really explain much. Is it a game? A fun app? Will it be available on Android and iOS? We don’t know the answers to any of these questions.

According to Windows Central, the announcement is supposedly for a game which has the internal codename “Genoa.” The game will launch at some point this year, according to WC’s source.

We’ll have to tune in on May 17 to find out what’s up. Coincidentally (or not?), a new Pokémon Go promotion ends that same day.
