MIUI 10: What to expect and will it come to your Xiaomi phone?

A portrait mode for single camera phones might be the best MIUI 10 feature on the list.

Xiaomi's MIUI 10 update.
TL;DR
  • MIUI 10 update for Xiaomi phones has been revealed with new software features.
  • MIUI 10 brings the ever-popular portrait mode to single camera Xiaomi phones.
  • Wondering if your phone is on the list? The company has revealed a timeline for the preview version of the update.

Xiaomi used its Mi 8 launch event to shed light on its new MIUI 10 Android skin as well. The latest version of the Android theme focuses on expanded full-screen support and a driving mode.

The biggest feature addition is Portrait Mode for both dual- and single-camera smartphones. Portrait-style modes have been available on selfie cameras in the last year on several HUAWEI devices, the Pixel 2, and, on the other side of the fence, the iPhone X. Switch to the rear camera, however, and the feature is usually restricted to dual-camera smartphones.

In fact, the Pixel 2 is one of the few phones on the market capable of a decent Portrait Mode using a solitary rear camera, so we’re glad to see Xiaomi implementing the feature. Here’s hoping it isn’t half-baked.

A new Recents menu

The MIUI 10 recents menu.

The Chinese company is also tweaking its Recents menu to take advantage of taller screens. We now have a vertically scrolling menu, along with those familiar full-screen gestures to switch apps and close them. Users will also have more options when long-pressing on an app in the Recents menu, such as locking it or shutting it down.

The driving mode is another noteworthy addition to MIUI 10, allowing you to conduct voice commands via the Xiao AI voice assistant. This is more of a Chinese-language feature, so we aren’t expecting it in the global version.

Finally, Xiaomi is claiming AI enhancements for performance in the new update. In a feature that evokes memories of HUAWEI’s EMUI 8, Xiaomi says MIUI 10 will study your phone behavior and allocate resources accordingly.
