TL;DR
  • Leaked logos suggest that Motorola will not release a Play version of the Moto G7.
  • This would not be without precedence as Motorola dropped the Play line in the Moto G5 series.
  • The Play model is usually the cheapest in the Moto G series.

Motorola may not release a Play version of its Moto G series next year, according to MySmartPrice. The website points to logos it obtained that feature the names Moto G7 and Moto G7 Plus, but not Moto G7 Play, as evidence. You can see the logos below:

While not the most irrefutable evidence, it wouldn’t be a move without precedence for Motorola. After introducing the Play version in the Moto G4 series, the Moto G5 and Moto G5S series saw Motorola only release the regular and Plus version of the phone.

The Play version of the Moto G series lineup is generally the cheapest. The Moto G6 Play is thicker and heavier than the regular version and also uses Micro USB, has a lower resolution display, and carries a weaker camera.

At the moment, we don’t have a ton of other information about the Moto G7 series.

The Moto G6 was released in April this year so it would seem likely that the Moto G7 will be released around the same time in 2019. However, we also recently saw leaked images of a finished-looking device with a waterdrop-style notch that the leaker claimed were of the Moto G7. Considering April is still over six months away, if the images are of the Moto G7, it would suggest the release could come sooner than expected.

Of course, until we hear something solid from Motorola, it is best to take all leaks with a pinch of salt.
