Another Motorola phone just picked up its big Android 17 update

Motorola’s Android 17 story has been something of a slow burn. What began with beta testing in February was followed by a broader list of eligible phones last month, before the stable update finally debuted on the Motorola Signature. Now the rollout is reaching its second device, with Android 17 beginning to land on the Motorola Edge 70.

Multiple Edge 70 owners are reporting that Android 17 has arrived on their phones, and Motorola has also published an official changelog for the update. The download weighs about 4.3GB and carries build number A17WRH.35-10.

The update introduces a fairly long list of changes. Edge 70 owners can now stack widgets on the home screen, use themed icons, and hide Quick Settings labels when using Motorola’s Classic layout. Android 17 also adds Live Updates for ongoing information, notification summaries for busy chats, and smarter notification organization that moves lower-priority alerts into quieter sections.

Motorola has also added enhanced HDR brightness controls, alongside the usual security, performance, compatibility, and stability improvements that come with a major Android release.

There is one catch, though. Some Edge 70 owners say the stable Android 17 update removed the depth-effect lock screen wallpapers available during beta testing, prompting complaints from users who expected the feature to carry over to stable software. There’s also at least one report of a missing Live Updates feature.

A Motorola employee responding on Reddit said there is currently no official release date or confirmation for the depth effect on the standard Edge 70. Users are instead advised to watch for future system or Moto Personalization app updates, since the feature could potentially arrive separately.

Even with that omission, the Edge 70 joining the Signature in receiving the stable Android 17 update shows the rollout is expanding beyond its initial release. The bigger question now is how quickly the rest of Motorola’s eligible lineup follows.
