New leaked renders of the Motorola Moto Z4 suggest a fairly large redesign for the series.

TL;DR
  • Leaked renders just hit the internet of what appears to be the Motorola Moto Z4.
  • The renders suggest Moto Mod support, a single rear camera lens, an in-display fingerprint sensor, and other design changes.
  • Allegedly, there will be not Moto Z4 Play variant, which could mean previous Z4 Play renders were actually the vanilla Z4.

A new set of renders that look to be of the upcoming Motorola Moto Z4 just hit the internet, via 91Mobiles. If the renders are legit, they suggest that Motorola is bringing some fresh new design elements to the Moto Z line — which is certainly a welcome change.

Although the Motorola Moto Z3 was a fine enough phone, it didn’t represent a huge leap in design over its predecessor, the Motorola Moto Z2 Force. The only real selling point of the Z3 was the fact that it supported the 5G Moto Mod, making it the first commercially-released smartphone with the ability to connect to a 5G network.

From the renders of the Motorola Moto Z4, we can assume a few things. The first is that the display has finally been refreshed to get rid of the Motorola logo at the bottom (thank you, Motorola!) leaving a nearly bezel-less design. At the top of the display is a waterdrop notch — nice and tiny. The front of the phone now looks like a modern device, unlike the Moto Z3 which looked like a phone from yesteryear.

On the back, we find the 16-pin connector and circular camera setup familiar to the Moto Z series, which suggests it will support current and future Moto Mods (likely including the 5G Moto Mod). This is interesting because Motorola only promised to support Moto Mods for a few years — it appears the company is still ready to invest in Mods.

The camera appears to have only one lens, suggesting Motorola is going by the Google Pixel playbook and bucking the multiple-lens camera trend. Although we can’t tell from the renders, rumors suggest the single lens will be a 48MP sensor from Sony.

There’s no fingerprint sensor on the back and there also doesn’t appear to be a side-mounted sensor, like there was on the Z3. This suggests that Motorola will employ an in-display fingerprint sensor for the Moto Z4.

If you look very closely, you can see a slight notch at the bottom of the device which suggests that there will be a 3.5mm headphone port on the Moto Z4.

These renders don’t give us any idea about specs, but we can expect the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor to be on board. However, Motorola usually doesn’t push other specs too far with its Moto Z line, so don’t expect tons of RAM or lots of internal storage space.

As a side note, we previously reported on some renders of what appeared to be the Motorola Moto Z4 Play. However, according to 91Mobiles, there will be no Play variant of the Z4 released. Therefore, it could be possible that those Z4 Play renders are actually vanilla Z4 renders. We’ll have to see how that pans out.

What do you think? Does the Motorola Moto Z4 look like an exciting change for Motorola? Or is it still too much of the same for you? Let us know in the comments!
