Motorola reveals rollable phone concept that extends from the top
- Motorola has revealed a rollable phone concept.
- The device offers a 5-inch screen that extends to 6.5-inches.
It seems like rollable smartphones are the next thing in mobile design, offering an alternative approach to foldable phones. Now, Motorola has joined the party by showing off a rollable phone prototype of its own.
The company showed off a rollable phone at the Lenovo Tech World 2022 conference, CNET reported, and it differs in a big way from previous efforts.
More specifically, the Motorola rollable phone’s screen extends from the top rather than from the side like prototypes from other manufacturers. This reportedly allows the phone screen to go from five inches to 6.5-inches, complete with the UI adjusting accordingly. Check out the clip below for a better idea.
We’re not quite sure about the exact screen aspect ratios at play here, but the retracted display brings to mind quirky devices like the LG Vu with its 4:3 screen.
Nevertheless, this approach differs from Oppo and LG‘s rollable phone prototypes. These earlier devices offer a large smartphone screen when retracted, turning into a tablet-style display when the screen is extended. Meanwhile, Motorola is using the rollable concept to offer a pocket-friendly phone that can turn into a large-screen handset. In other words, this is for people who want a more compact phone rather than a tablet in your pocket.
This is just a concept right now, so there’s no guarantee that this product will ever see the light of day. But we hope manufacturers adequately address concerns about screen and motor durability before these devices get commercial releases.
