Google could bring the Pixel 11's customized My Pixel colors to older Pixels

Google introduced a handful of new upgrades with the Pixel 11 series. Among them was an updated My Pixel app with a handy search bar and a revamped app icon that adapts to the phone’s color. It now looks like Google plans to expand this color-based app icon to older Pixel phones as well.

Looking at version 8.9.1 of the My Pixel app, we’ve spotted evidence that Google could let the app icon reflect the Pixel 9’s body color. Strangely, we’re not yet seeing the same treatment for the Pixel 10 series in the My Pixel app, though that may change imminently.

In the first screenshot above, we can see the My Pixel icons for all Pixel smartphones, barring the Pixel 11. The second image shows the in-development update that adds specific icon colors to the Pixel 9 series. We can recognize some colors, such as Hazel, Rose Quartz, and Obsidian, among others, all associated with the 2024 Pixel flagship lineup.

Unfortunately, we’re not seeing all Pixel 9 models here, with the Pixel 9a and Pixel 9 Pro Fold suspiciously absent. This could be because the color upgrade is still a work in progress. Meanwhile, we couldn’t get the color-based icon to appear on our Porcelain Pixel 9 during our time with the new My Pixel app.

While some Pixel 9 owners may soon get a customized My Pixel app icon, Google is making a slight tweak to the app icon for everyone else.

The current app icon uses a dark shade of blue, with black and purple elements illustrated on a Pixel device. A forthcoming update could change this to light blue and change the Google logo to white for better visibility.

My Pixel is certainly not an app that you’d spend hours using, unless you’ve just bought a Pixel smartphone. Still, small tweaks like these highlight that Google still cares about the little details on its older flagship phones.

While we can’t confirm this yet, the Pixel 10 series may gain support for the color-matched app icon, alongside the Pixel 9 lineup. Exactly when that will be is still a mystery, though we hopefully won’t have to wait too long.
