Hold onto your hats, this was a busy week!
- Samsung launched the Galaxy Tab S7 FE and Galaxy Tab A7 Lite tablets. The Tab S7 FE is more like a cut-back Tab S7, and not available in the US at this stage. The A7 Lite goes for just $159, starting June 10.
- Also at Samsung, we got a peek at the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2’s design, with an FCC listing (with photos) confirming their existence.
- OnePlus will reportedly launch two new Nord phones soon, but neither is the Nord 2: the US gets the Nord N200 5G, which looks like a value 5G device.
- Arm announced its 2021 CPUs and GPUs. This is a big deal, although they might well be more like CPUs and GPUs for 2022. That’s because it’s unlikely we’ll see a Qualcomm flagship mobile chip with these until early 2022. Last year, the Xiaomi Mi 11 launched as the first Snapdragon 888 phone at the end of 2020, though the global launch was a month later. Back to what Arm has for us: healthy speed, power, and efficiency gains of course, plus the first CPU architecture shift since 2011.
- More Sony WF-1000XM4 feature details spilled in an extensive new leak.
- Valve’s portable gaming PC was reported for the first time; a Switch-like competitor currently in the prototype phase. Could be a major new entrant, if Valve gets it right.
- Then reports emerged that Nintendo will announce a Switch Pro before E3 happens next month. That’s only in two weeks’ time or so, but the actual console with a boosted Nvidia graphics chipset is more likely to be released in September/October.
- Multiple reports suggesting Netflix will debut an Apple Arcade-like gaming bundle by 2022. Gaming is massive, and Netflix’s growth ambitions are just as large.
- Amazon paid $8.45 billion to buy MGM and its many franchises, including 4,000 films and 13,000 TV shows. Wild.
- And USB-C Power Delivery hits 240W with extended power range, via the new R2.1 for Type-C and R3.1 for USB-PD specifications (AnandTech)
- Lenovo Legion Duel 2 review: Another gaming beast, though classic compromises including an average camera, no IP rating, and it’s much, much easier to hold and use in landscape mode.
- Hands-on with the Acer 317, the world’s first 17-inch Chromebook, which starts at $379/€399.
- Amazon Echo Buds (2nd Gen) review: Good functions, great fit, and for $120, serious competition.
Features
- A big feature this week was hearing directly from Carl Pei about Nothing. Takeaways: the coming earbuds have Pokémon codenames, and Pei revealed he just hasn’t been excited by anything in tech for a while now.
- You told us: Here’s how many Android devices you have, aside from phones
- “Harmony Audio Video: What my Dad gave his shop for 45 years” (The Atlantic).
Alert: this week, you can sadly strike an in-person BlizzCon 2021 from your calendars. It’ll be virtual, again, in 2022.
- June 7-11: WWDC 2021
- June 13: E3 2021
- June 28-July 1: MWC 2021
