The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P may have just received their last updates

Launched in 2015, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P are practically ancient at this point. That said, Google guaranteed and delivered three years of updates for the two smartphones. With updates no longer guaranteed for the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, we might see the end of an era as soon as December.

That does not mean the two remaining Nexus smartphones officially reached end-of-life status. Keep in mind that the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 each saw an update after their supposed ends. The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P already received two extra security patches, so one or two additional patches would not be unheard of.

The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P also retain strong ROM communities that continue to push out custom software for the two smartphones and represented a turning point for Google in the camera department.

That said, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P are still on Android 8.1 Oreo and will not get the official Android 9 Pie update. Both smartphones also encountered several frustrating hardware problems that led to bootloops and lawsuits against LG and Google.

The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P were also notable for being two of the best Android smartphones during a time when Qualcomm floundered with its flagship processors. The Snapdragon 810 in the Nexus 6P was notorious for its overheating and resulting performance throttling. The Snapdragon 808 in the Nexus 5X acted as a band-aid that delivered good performance and was featured in other flagship smartphones.

If you still own and use either the Nexus 5X or Nexus 6P, bless your heart. Google may have killed the Nexus program, but phones like the OnePlus 6T show that the Nexus legacy lives on in other devices. Also of note is the Android One program, which features smartphones with a clean version of Android, timely updates, and relatively low price tags.
