A custom Nokia 8 variant could be coming to the US

A new report suggests that HMD Global could be readying a modified version of the Nokia 8 for the Chinese and US markets, starting at 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB ROM.

The Nokia 8 is HMD Global’s first “premium” Android phone, unveiled just last week in London. It’s set to go on sale in for €600 in Europe next month, but, despite its flagship status, a release in big markets like the US and China wasn’t discussed. Speculation from yesterday suggests that this may be on the cards, though.

According to Nokiapoweruser‘s sources, a custom version of the Nokia 8 may be sold in both the US and China in the future. Apparently, this variant would come with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage space as standard in China — the 4 GB RAM and 64 GB version going on the market in September seemingly wouldn’t be available. Nokiapoweruser also said that some other changes to the device would probably be included, though it didn’t offer any hints as to what these might be.

If HMD is dropping the smaller storage and RAM variant, however, you might expect that the changes would be to bump up other specs (though it’s already equipped with some powerful tech — the likes of which you can read about in our Nokia 8 hands-on review).

Specific information regarding the US version also wasn’t discussed, but it may simply follow suit with the Chinese version.

Nokiapoweruser also said that HMD could be assigning a “very high priority” to the Chinese market, but perhaps less so for the US. How this would affect the Nokia 8 — whether it would just mean it hits China first or something else — we don’t know.

As to when exactly the new Nokia 8 would arrive, that also wasn’t reported (yes, this is all a little hazy at the moment), but HMD Global released the Nokia 6 in China back in January and it took until July for it to land in the US. If that’s any indication, we could be waiting a while.
