Nokia's first Android smartphones are now supported for three years

HMD Global first brought Nokia-branded Android phones to market back in 2017, launching the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6, and Nokia 8. At the time, the company said it would offer two years of security updates.

Now, HMD has taken to its forum (h/t: XDA) to confirm that it will offer an extra year of security updates. This means these phones will be supported for three years in total. Don’t expect monthly security patches though, as these phones will receive quarterly patches instead.

“After two years of monthly updates, the Nokia 3 will be the first model to start receiving quarterly updates from September 2019 until September 2020,” the Nokia brand licensee noted in its forum. Here’s what you can expect from other Nokia phones released in 2017:

• Nokia 5 — From October 2019 to October 2020
• Nokia 6 — From October 2019 to October 2020
• Nokia 8 — From October 2019 to October 2020

Unfortunately, Nokia 2 owners can expect quarterly security updates to conclude in November 2019. Meanwhile, the Nokia 6 Amazon (U.S. and India variants) will be supported until October 2019.

HMD Global isn’t the only Android phone manufacturer to support devices over two years after release. Samsung still issues quarterly security patches to its Galaxy S7 flagships, even though they were launched in 2016. In any event, HMD and Samsung’s commitment seems to be the exception rather than the rule in the Android space.
