'More premium' Nothing Phone 2 confirmed with US launch 'number one priority'

It looks like most of the things Nothing fans wanted with the Phone 1 could come true with the Phone 2.

TL;DR
  • Carl Pei has confirmed details about the upcoming Nothing Phone 2.
  • The phone will launch this year and be “more premium” than the Phone 1.
  • A US launch is also the “number one priority” for Nothing.

The Nothing Phone 1 wasn’t the best phone of 2022, but it certainly was the most interesting. Its light-up back (aka “The Glyph”) and premium design with a budget price certainly raised some eyebrows. Unfortunately, some not-so-premium specs and the lack of a US release prevented the phone from being an all-around winner.

That could change in 2023. According to an interview with Inverse, Nothing CEO Carl Pei has confirmed there will be a Nothing Phone 2 in 2023. While this might not seem surprising, it goes against a tweet we saw from Carl only a month ago, in which he stated that the Phone 1 would remain the company’s focus.

“We’re developing a smartphone that’s more premium than the Nothing Phone 1, and software will be a big focus area for us,” Pei said in the interview. So it appears his hesitance to commit to a Phone 2 in December has all but vanished.

Throughout the article, Carl confirms quite a bit about the phone. He confirms that the company has a US launch of the Nothing Phone 2 as its “number one priority.” This is great news, as the lack of a Nothing Phone here (in full terms, anyway) is disappointing. “When you make a smartphone for the US, you need to work with the carriers on certification and adapting some of their features into your OS,” Pei says. “We didn’t have the resources for that before, and now we do.”

Unfortunately, Pei didn’t have much to say about the specifics of the Phone 2. He wouldn’t commit to any design features, although it’s a bygone conclusion The Glyph would return. He didn’t comment on specs or price, either. However, those smartphone buyers who are ready for something new this year should jot this one down, as the Nothing Phone 2 could be quite exciting.
