Still using the 'old' Gmail design? Your time is up.
- Google is removing the option for you to roll back to the “old” Gmail design.
- The new design will become the standard for everyone starting this month.
- Google has not set a specific date, but you should probably prepare for it to happen at any moment.
Earlier this year, Google announced a brand new look for Gmail. The main purpose of the redesign was to integrate various Google properties into one, including Chat, Spaces, and Meet. However, the company didn’t force users to change over to the new design immediately.
Now, that grace period is coming to an end. According to a blog post, your ability to use the “old” Gmail will cease sometime this month. Google doesn’t list a specific date/time for the forced switch, but it’s coming soon.
Originally, Google said this day would come before the end of the second quarter of 2022. So, in that respect, folks still using the old Gmail design have been doing so on borrowed time anyway.
There are many benefits to using the new design, though. Having everything on the left side of the screen and easily accessible makes logical sense. And, you can still use Gmail’s theme system and other optional tweaks to make it look unique to you.
If you are still using the old Gmail, we would recommend switching over now and getting used to it. That would probably be better than waking up one day to find everything switched while you weren’t looking.
