OnePlus 8 and 8T owners can now test out Android 12, but there's a huge catch
- The first OnePlus 8 Android 12 closed beta program is now open.
- You’ll need to apply for one of only 400 slots.
- It will likely be a month or two before the program becomes an open beta for anyone.
If you own a OnePlus 9 series phone, you’ve had access to a beta version of Oxygen OS 12 — based on Android 12 — for a while now. However, Android 12 is also coming to older phones from OnePlus. What about them?
Today, OnePlus opened up the first OnePlus 8 Android 12 closed beta program. Unlike the current open beta for the OnePlus 9 series, you’ll need to submit an application to gain access to this version. This program is open to the OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, and OnePlus 8T.

However, OnePlus says there are only 400 slots available (200 for the 8 series, 200 for the 8T series). That is a tiny amount of space so chances are high most people won’t make it in. If you want to get in, we’d advise getting your application in ASAP. Just click here and fill out the form then cross your fingers.
With the unveiling of this program, we now know it will be a month or two before an open beta begins. That means it is highly unlikely we’ll see a stable OnePlus 8 Android 12 rollout in 2021. It’s much more likely we’ll see it in early 2022.
For what it’s worth, we’ve already had a look at Oxygen OS 12 on a OnePlus 9 Pro. Despite OnePlus’ claims to the contrary, it appears to be a full-on port of Oppo’s Color OS with only a few minor tweaks. We’ve also already let you know how we feel about this.
