This could be our first look at the OnePlus 9's camera hardware
- Leaked details of the OnePlus 9’s rear camera array have been revealed.
- The phone is expected to feature at least three rear cameras backed by two 48MP sensors.
- A third unknown sensor is also present, which could be another macro lens.
So far, the OnePlus 9 hasn’t shed many of its secrets. We’ve seen purported CAD renders that suggested the phones will carry at least three rear cameras. We now have a better idea of what that trio might offer.
Per a 91Mobiles report, the next OnePlus flagship will sport a 48MP primary sensor at the rear which grabs 12MP pixel-binned shots. Joining it is another 48MP sensor pulling wide-angle camera duty. The third shooter’s hardware remains unknown, but it may be a reprise of the OnePlus 8T‘s monochrome sensor or the macro camera used on both previous OnePlus flagships. The publication also shared a purported live image of the OnePlus 9’s array. See it below.
For frequent selfie shooters, details of the sensor mounted in the punch-hole remain unknown. We wouldn’t be too surprised to see the 16MP sensor from the OnePlus 8T make a return, though.
The leak suggests OnePlus is going for incremental upgrades rather than a total camera hardware overhaul. In our OnePlus 8T review, we noted the phone’s camera performance was sorely lacking compared to its contemporaries. A beefier wide-angle shooter may go some way to rectifying at least one aspect of this. It remains unclear if OnePlus will also retain the Sony IMX 586 used on the 8T, or employ the OnePlus 8 Pro‘s IMX689.
More details will likely be revealed soon. The OnePlus 9 series is rumored to debut a little earlier than usual — around March 2021 — so expect leaks to come thick and fast until early next year.
