How OnePlus thinks about top-tier displays
A good display is key to just about any smartphone on the market. After all, it’s what you’ll spend hours looking at every single day, so you’re bound to notice if something isn’t quite right. Luckily for all of us, OnePlus has kept the need for an excellent display near and dear to its heart since day one.
We’ve long gushed about the crisp OLED displays and snappy refresh rates, but they’re only the tip of the iceberg. OnePlus manages to stay at the top of the smartphone display game with careful planning and a long history of success. Let’s take a look at how they got here.
Pushing the boundaries of new displays
For a number of years, smartphone OEMs doubted the need for high refresh rates. 90Hz displays were once thought of as overkill — oh, how times have changed. We were quick to point out the impressive then-new addition on the OnePlus 7 Pro, stating in one of our articles:
“The OnePlus 7 Pro introduced a few firsts to not only OnePlus phones but the entire smartphone market in general. Aside from being the first phone with a pop-up selfie camera to hit store shelves in the United States, it was the first commercially released phone with a 90Hz refresh rate on an OLED display.”
It takes a lot to leap into a new, powerful display, but OnePlus didn’t stop there. The OnePlus 7 Pro also had the distinct honor of bringing a 1440p resolution to life. After all, there’s a good reason that the OnePlus 7 Pro stands as some of our writers’ favorite Android phones all these years later.
Excellent displays since day one
OnePlus didn’t just wake up and decide to push the boundaries of display technology with the OnePlus 7 Pro. In fact, it started right at the very beginning with the OnePlus One. The OEM dove into the market with a 5.5-inch Full HD display just to show that it means business.
By the time the OnePlus 6T rolled around, OnePlus was ready to change the game again with the first in-display fingerprint reader. It served as the only model to offer the feature in 2018, and well into 2019 before the launch of Samsung’s Galaxy S10 series.
The OnePlus 7 Pro also received a stunning A-plus rating from DisplayMate, which is the highest given by the organization. While the 7 Pro brought 90Hz to the world of smartphones, the OnePlus 8 Pro took things even further with a 120Hz panel. We can’t forget that OnePlus is the first OEM to support Fortnite on mobile at a remarkable 90fps.
This long history of impressive OnePlus displays has led us to where we are today with the OnePlus 9 series. The OnePlus 9 Pro is a true killer flagship with its Fluid Display 2.0 technology that automatically adjusts your frame rate based on any number of different tasks. It also boosts the resolution to Quad HD Plus to go along with the smooth 120Hz refresh rate.
We loved the display in our review, as did DisplayMate, granting yet another A-plus rating. The OnePlus 9 Pro tops out at 1,300 nits of brightness, and it boasts more than 8,000 levels of automatic brightness to ensure comfort in any situation.
It’s tough to deny that the OnePlus 9 Pro’s display makes it excellent for gaming — even if it’s not expressly designed for such a purpose. Impressive Hyper Touch technology means that you can tap into 240Hz sampling rates and the 360Hz sync speed is up to six times faster than ever before.
