OnePlus Nord meaning: What you need to know
The Nord series is a chance for OnePlus to do things differently. It includes not one model but a range of affordable phones as alternatives to the OEM’s flagship killers. Even the naming structure is a little different, and here’s what you need to know about the meaning of the OnePlus Nord name.
On this page, we’ll dig into the idea behind the Nord line, as well as what Nord actually means. Right now, the family includes four phones, but we can expect plenty more in the future. Let’s get to it.
What is the OnePlus Nord line?
OnePlus introduced its first Nord model in July of 2020, introducing the Nord with decidedly mid-range specs. It packed a Snapdragon 765 chipset, four rear cameras, and speedy 5G support. While it packed plenty of nice features, OnePlus did have to ditch a few goodies like an IP rating and wireless charging to keep the cost down.
After the launch of the original Nord, OnePlus added to the family with its Nord N10 and N100. They both take the budget idea even further, with the N10 costing just €350 while the N100 drops to €200. You’ll find weaker processors yet again, but you can check out our reviews below.

The latest addition to the Nord family comes in the brand-new Nord CE. It slots in between the N10 and N100, offering solid battery life and decent performance while falling into a few of the traps that plague budget devices. Dhruv found plenty to enjoy in his Nord CE review, though you’ll have to judge the value for yourself.
What is the meaning of the name Nord?
Now, what you’re really here for — the mysterious secret behind the name Nord. It’s actually not much of a secret anymore, as OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei pulled back the covers last July.
According to Pei, the name Nord “comes from the concept of true north.
“This product line reminds us to always search for our true north, and we hope it will keep reminding you of yours,” he wrote in a tweet.
Some people have been asking what the Nord name means. It comes from the concept of true north. We each have this inner compass that guides us. This product line reminds us to always search for our true north, and we hope it will keep reminding you of yours.— Carl Pei (@getpeid) July 1, 2020
“True north” is basically a guiding principle and refers to the ideal direction in which someone or something should be heading. So for OnePlus, it could mean a return to its “Never Settle” mantra or its original strategy of offering premium yet affordable devices.
There you go, everything there is to know about the OnePlus Nord name and its meaning. While we wish it had something to do with Vikings, we can’t argue with the motivation behind the name.
