Your OnePlus phone will now optimize charging while you snooze
OnePlus has always been at the forefront of fast charging solutions for smartphones. It started with Dash charging on the OnePlus 3 and moved up to Warp Charge 30T on the OnePlus 7T. As OnePlus boosts charging speeds (not charging power), battery drain remains an issue of concern. This is why the company has introduced a new feature called Optimized Charging.
When you put your phone on charge before going to bed, Optimized Charging will ensure the battery charges to 80% initially. It will then temporarily suspend charging using OnePlus’ sleep cycle detection feature. The phone will only charge to 100%, 100 minutes before you wake up. This way, the battery will stay at around 80% for most of the night, hopefully prolonging its life.
Keeping your phone connected at 100% charge through the night is not good for long-term battery health. It’s possible OnePlus has done some internal testing to conclude that partial charging is better for batteries.
How to enable Optimized Charging on your OnePlus phone?
Optimized Charging has been available on the OnePlus 7 series since OxygenOS Open Beta 7. With its official announcement, the feature is expected to reach other OnePlus phones pretty soon.
To enable the feature, open Settings > Battery > turn on Optimized Charging. Over time, your OnePlus phone will learn your daily routine and collect relevant activity data which is locally stored on your phone.
The battery icon on your phone will indicate the active status of the feature. The notifications drop-down menu will also display the charging state alongside a toggle to turn it off. Alternatively, you can disable Optimized Charging from the same settings path mentioned above.
In the future, OnePlus aims to improve upon its sleep cycle detection feature to more accurately predict sleep times. This will further help make Optimized Charging more effective.
“We will continue to improve OnePlus’ in-depth sleep detection capability in unconventional sleep times, such as staying up late on weekends, recognition when changing time zones, etc. We hope to optimize your charging experience on and on,” the company wrote in its forum post.
