OnePlus takes on the iPad with its most powerful tablet ever

Expect loads of horsepower and plenty of AI features. No fingerprint scanner, though.

TL;DR
  • OnePlus has announced the OnePlus Pad 2, and it might be the most powerful Android tablet of 2024.
  • The tablet brings a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, 67W wired charging, and loads of AI features.
  • The new slate has a recommended price of $549, but the company is offering a great promotional bundle.

OnePlus confirmed that it would launch the OnePlus Pad 2 as part of its summer launch event. Well, the day is here and the company has indeed revealed a new Android tablet.

The OnePlus Pad 2 is effectively the global version of the China-only OnePlus Pad Pro. That means we’ve got a metal unibody design, a 12.1-inch 144Hz LCD screen (3,000 x 2,120, 900 nits peak brightness, 600 nits typical brightness), and a 9,510mAh battery. There’s no wireless charging support here, so you’ll have to make do with 67W wired charging. Furthermore, the charger doesn’t appear to be in the box. Nevertheless, OnePlus reckons you can get a full charge in 81 minutes when using a 67W SuperVOOC adapter.

This might also be the first globally released tablet with the top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, so mobile gamers or those who prioritize performance above all else should definitely keep that in mind.

The rest of the tablet isn’t too shabby, offering 8GB to 12GB of RAM, 128GB or 256GB of fixed storage, a 13MP rear camera, and an 8MP selfie camera. Other notable hardware features include Bluetooth 5.4, six speakers, and Wi-Fi 7. Unfortunately, the tablet lacks a fingerprint scanner, so you’ll need to rely on camera-based face unlock. That’s a real disappointment.

Hardware is just half the story, as the OnePlus Pad 2 also brings Oxygen OS 14 atop Android 14. And there’s plenty to like here. This includes the Open Canvas feature for improved split-screen multitasking, shortcuts to recent files in the taskbar, and a variety of AI additions. These AI features include an improved AI object eraser for photos, Smart Cutout 2.0 to cut and lift subjects from a picture, recorder summaries, and the AI Toolbox suite (text-to-speech, article summaries, text generation). The AI Toolbox features will be available in September 2024, while the other AI features are slated to arrive this month.

Got a recent OnePlus phone? Then the new tablet also packs several cross-device capabilities. These include cross-device file sharing with the aid of NFC in the optional OnePlus keyboard, easy hotspot sharing, image/video/clipboard/notification syncing, and remote file access. There’s no word on the device’s update policy just yet.

OnePlus Pad 2 pricing

The new tablet will be available via OnePlus.com (from July 30) and Amazon (from mid-August) and has a starting price of $549 for the 8GB/128GB model. The company is also offering three optional accessories, namely a smart keyboard ($149.99), the OnePlus Stylo 2 stylus ($99.99), and the Folio Case 2 ($39.99).

OnePlus is also offering a promotional bundle from July 16 until July 30, offering the OnePlus Pad 2 and all the aforementioned accessories for $484.99. Either way, this is looking like an enticing offer for Android tablet fans and iPad users who are curious about the Android ecosystem.
