TL;DR
  • Open GApps packages are now available for devices running Android Pie-based ROMs.
  • The packages allow users to quickly get key Google services and apps on their phones.

The Open GApps project is one of the most essential downloads for fans of custom ROMs. The project combines key Google services (e.g. Play Store, Gmail, Play Services) in one package, so you don’t have to sift around for Google goodness.

Now, Open GApps has come to smartphones running Android Pie, according to Android Police. This means you don’t need to side-load individual app packages if you want to flash an Android Pie-based ROM on your device.

The project initially offered the new version of Open GApps for 32-bit ARM devices only, but the team has quickly launched versions for devices on ARM64 and x86 architectures. Chances are good that the package is available for your device.

The project also has a variety of packages, so you can only opt for the bare essentials (e.g. Play Store, Play Services, Calendar) or grab the largest package (containing all Google apps to ever ship on a device). The smallest offering weighs in at under 100MB, while the biggest package is just under 950MB.

There’s a package containing a graphical interface too, allowing you to choose each app/service to be installed on your phone — you’re bound to find a variant to suit your device and preferences.
