TL;DR
  • OpenAI is expanding the AI models powering ChatGPT Dots, including GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Terra.
  • Dots will automatically choose the best AI model for each task and can use multiple models to get the job done.
  • GPT-6.1 Terra promises faster performance and a friendlier personality, while helping OpenAI bring Dots to more users.

OpenAI is making ChatGPT Dots more capable, but the interesting part isn’t just that they’re getting access to more powerful AI models. It’s that they’ll be able to choose the right model for whatever you’re asking, so you won’t have to figure that out yourself.

Thibault Sottiaux, who works on Codex and ChatGPT at OpenAI, shared on X that the company is expanding the lineup of models powering Dots. This includes GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Terra, with more expected to arrive down the road. According to Sottiaux, Terra brings faster performance and a more pleasant personality, while also helping OpenAI make Dots available to more people.

If you haven’t heard of ChatGPT Dots before, they’re personal AI assistants that can keep working on things even when you’re away. Instead of opening ChatGPT and explaining what you need every time, your Dot can remember what you’re working on and pick up where it left off.

Say you’re planning a vacation and have already discussed your budget, preferred destinations, and travel dates. Your Dot can remember those details and continue researching your options without making you repeat everything. And you don’t even have to open ChatGPT to talk to your Dot anymore, as you can now chat with it directly through Google Messages or iMessage, just like you would with anyone else.

But here’s what makes this update interesting. Sottiaux says Dots will automatically choose the right model for the job, even switching between models for different parts of the same task.

Of course, we’ll have to see how well this works in practice. But the idea of an AI assistant that can pick the right tools for the job, rather than expecting you to make those decisions, is certainly a step in the right direction.
