Active noise cancelling (ANC) is a key selling point of the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, but it isn’t immediately obvious how to turn noise cancelling on with airpods. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about ANC control on an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Android device.

Note that if you’re considering AirPods, you need an Apple device to get the full experience. If you don’t use one, you’ll get a limited set of features at best. Android users are usually better off with other wireless earbuds.

QUICK ANSWER

  • With an iPhone or iPad, go to Control Center, tap and hold the volume slider, then select Noise Control. Choose between Noise cancellation, Transparency, or Off.
  • With a Mac, open Control Center, click Bluetooth, and then the arrow next to the AirPods. Select Off, Noise Cancellation, or Transparency.
  • On the AirPods Max headphones themselves, press the Noise Control button on the right ear cup. With the AirPods Pro, press and hold the force sensor on the stem until you hear a chime.

How to turn noise cancelling on or off with AirPods Pro on Android

With AirPods paired to an Android phone, the only way to toggle noise cancelling is directly from the AirPods. By default, the AirPods Pro can only toggle between ANC and transparency modes. To turn ANC off, you’ll need access to an iPhone. If you can wrangle a friend’s iPhone, follow these steps to expand the press-and-hold control:

  1. Pair your AirPods with the iPhone.
  2. Open the iOS Settings app.
  3. Tap the name of your AirPods Pro. This should appear below the phone owner’s Apple ID information.
  4. Follow this path: Press and Hold AirPods > Left Noise Control > Tap the Off option.

When you press and hold either AirPods stem, your AirPods Pro will cycle through ANC, Transparency, and Off when paired to an Android phone.

There are a few solutions if active noise canceling (ANC) is not working on your AirPods. First, ensure you have the latest software installed on your source device. Place both AirPods in your ears and check that active noise cancellation (ANC) is switched on. Afterward, check whether Adaptive Audio is enabled, as this adjusts noise canceling based on your environment.

If none of the solutions above solve your issue, clean the microphone and speaker meshes using a soft-bristled paintbrush. You may need to contact Apple support if this doesn't help.
