TL;DR
  • Google has announced geospatial AR content for Google Maps.
  • The interactive content aims to help users explore and learn about famous landmarks.
  • The feature is rolling out as a pilot program, landing in Singapore and Paris later this year.

Google has recently rolled out several updates to Maps, including 3D buildings and green travel options promoting more planet-friendly transport modes. At Google I/O 2024, the company announced the addition of geospatial AR content to Google Maps, making the app a more interactive travel companion.

When content is available, and a user is close to a landmark, an AR Experience tile will appear in that landmark’s photo roll. Users can tap this content and hold their phone up to that landmark to view a Lens guide that divulges interesting information about the area, including fun facts and deeper history.

Notably, users can also access the content remotely using Street View. Users can share a deep link URL or QR code with other travel companions or loved ones back home.

The feature will see a limited rollout initially as part of a six-month pilot program in Singapore and Paris. There’s no word when the feature will roll out to other cities and landmarks worldwide.
