The team behind those great N64 Zelda ports just released Paper Mario on PC

There’s no shortage of Nintendo 64 games unofficially ported to other platforms, and the Harbor Masters team is responsible for some of the best ports in general. There’s good news if you were waiting for the team to release another port.

The Harbor Masters group has just released PaperBoat, an unofficial port of Paper Mario, on Windows, Linux, and MacOS. Paper Mario is a classic turn-based action-RPG starring Mario and released in 2000. The game also stands out thanks to its unique visuals, with characters appearing as 2D paper-style cutouts.

As with other recompilations and fan ports, you’ll need to supply the game ROM as the developers don’t include the actual Paper Mario assets. PaperBoat specifically supports the US version of the game.

Otherwise, I can confirm that this port works just fine on my laptop. Expect a variety of extra options compared to the original game, such as resolution scaling, adjustable frame rates via interpolation, various aspect ratios, integer scaling, gamepad and keyboard support, a mod menu, cheats, and shaders.

The Harbor Masters team rarely releases these ports on Android, but there’s a good chance we’ll see an Android port of some kind based on this project. This Paper Mario recompilation also joins a host of other ports released by the team. Other notable Harbor Masters ports include The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Starfox 64, Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, and Mario Kart 64. The team is also working on an Animal Crossing port as its next project.
