Render leaks of 'Pixelstand' – Wireless charging dock for Pixel 3
- A press render of the so-called “Pixelstand” just leaked to the internet.
- It appears the stand will prop up the Google Pixel 3 and wirelessly charge it.
- The Pixelstand might also trigger a new UI that will make the Pixel 3 into a kind of smart display.
While there isn’t much we don’t know about the Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL, those two devices aren’t the only things Google will launch at its hardware event on October 9. Today, we get our first real look at one of those items, the so-called “Pixelstand.”
The Pixelstand (which we heard about for the first time a few months ago) appears to be a wireless charging dock that will quickly charge your Pixel 3. All you have to do is prop the phone up on the Pixelstand and it will charge the device through its supposed glass back.
The design of the Pixelstand takes a lot of cues from the smart speakers in the Google Home line of products, with a white, curvy body and an orange base. Check it out in the render below, via MySmartPrice:
We can’t be certain, but it’s highly likely that’s a USB Type-C cable running out of the base, which would mean fast charging capabilities with this charging dock.
According to previous leaks surrounding the Pixelstand, when you place your Pixel 3 onto the stand it will likely trigger a custom UI on the phone that will turn it into a kind of smart display. It will have shortcuts to most-used features when the phone is propped — such as music, phone, Google Assistant, etc. — and might even have always-listening capabilities like a Google Home smart speaker. The Pixelstand itself could even have a small speaker built in, although it’s hard to tell just from the image above.
Since we’ve already seen the Google Pixel 3 XL wirelessly charge via the enormous leak of prototypes, it is almost completely certain that the devices will have wireless charging. But seeing this Pixelstand makes us think that Google is going to put a significant amount of emphasis on this feature.
The release of the Pixelstand will also be a little dig at Apple, which has delayed its own wireless charging dock multiple times in the past year.
