The Red Hydrogen One smartphone is coming to AT&T and Verizon (Updated)

Original article, 10:19 a.m. ET: In a time where notches and dropped headphone jacks make phones blend into one another, we’re glad to see the Hydrogen One handset. Camera company RED’s first smartphone packs a unique holographic display, and now, AT&T has announced that it’ll stock the phone.

The phone will launch on the network “later this summer,” AT&T revealed. The holographic (4V) display means users can “look around, below and into the screen’s image” without the aid of special glasses. The display resolution tops out at 2,560 x 1,440 otherwise, which should be more than sufficient for your 2D video needs.

The AT&T announcement comes after RED founder Jim Jannard’s forum post last month, where he confirmed that the launch date has been pushed back to August. Pre-order customers will receive their phones “well before launch” nonetheless.

It’s all fine having crazy technology like a holographic display, but is it any good? You can find out for yourself as AT&T will be hosting a public demo June 2-3. The demo will take place at the AT&T Shape expo, set for Warner Bros. Studios in Los Angeles. You’ll need to register for the expo over here.

What else to know about Hydrogen One?

The new phone will also let users shoot 4V/holographic content without the need for an add-on module. Both front and rear camera setups will support 4V shooting, Jannard said in last month’s forum post. Yes, this means holographic video chat will indeed be a thing.

Aside from your own content, RED is also promising the HYDROGEN Network, serving up 4V videos from studios and content providers. In other words, it seems like the company is trying to make full use of that holographic display.

The Hydrogen One won’t be the most powerful smartphone on the market when it launches, serving up last year’s Snapdragon 835 chipset. But how many other phones have a holographic display anyway? It also packs a 4,500mAh battery, Moto-style pins for add-on modules, USB Type-C, hybrid SIM support, and a headphone jack.

Will the technology actually mark an inflection point for the mobile industry? We’ll have to wait and see, but here’s hoping it’s better than the HTCEvo 3D and its 3D display.
