The Redmi Note 8 is expected to be a huge upgrade over devices like the Redmi 7 and Note 7.

Update, August 26 2019 (7:13AM ET): Xiaomi has now confirmed to Android Authority (and via Weibo) that it’s launching a special World of Warcraft edition Redmi Note 8 Pro on August 29.

“The partnership is about a special WoW edition made for Redmi Note 8 Pro,” a Xiaomi spokesperson told us, linking to a Weibo post. The Weibo post doesn’t actually show the phone, but we do get a look at two phone boxes (showing light and dark colorways). Check it out below.

The World of Warcraft edition is shaping up to be the icing on a rather tantalizing cake at this point. We’ve asked Xiaomi whether this edition will be available outside of China and will update the article when/if we receive a response.

Original article, August 23 2019 (3:57AM ET): The Redmi Note 8 series launch is less than a week away, and we’ve already learned a few details about the upcoming devices. Xiaomi seems to be positioning the range as a photography and gaming platform of note, owing to the 64MP camera and Helio G90T chipset respectively.

Further evidence of the gaming approach comes via the Redmi Weibo account, as the Xiaomi sub-brand just announced a partnership with World of Warcraft for the new phones.

A poster announcing a partnership between World of Warcraft and Xiaomi for the Redmi Note 8.

“In 15 years, the heroes on Azeroth have always defended their honor. The warriors are still young. The legend is still circulated. We all stick to our own desperate love just to wait, your arrival!” read an attached image (seen above), according to machine translation.

The mention of “15 years” in the image presumably refers to the 15th anniversary of World of Warcraft. The popular MMORPG title launched back in 2004.

The Weibo post didn’t reveal further details regarding the partnership, but mentioned the Redmi Note 8, Redmi Note 8 Pro, and the August 29 launch date. There are several possibilities as a result of the tie-up, such as a special edition Redmi Note 8 model, exclusive themes and wallpapers, or even a mobile version of World of Warcraft.

If a World of Warcraft mobile game is in the works, then it’s also possible that it could be a timed-exclusive for Xiaomi devices and/or China. But this is all pretty much just speculation at this point.

This isn’t the only gaming-related tidbit teased by Xiaomi ahead of the Redmi Note 8 launch. The company also hinted on Weibo that the new phones would support a Nintendo Switch-style gamepad accessory.
