Samsung Browser can now hunt down coupons while you shop

Samsung Browser has finally decided to put its coupon-hunting skills to work. Earlier this year, we dug into an unreleased browser build and found signs of a new Smart shopping feature designed to sniff out coupon codes and potentially shave a few dollars off your cart total. It wasn’t usable then, but that’s changing now, with Samsung rolling out the feature in the latest version of its Android browser.

X user Kailash spotted Smart shopping rolling out with Samsung Browser version 30.0.5.24, a newer build than version 30.0.0.67 currently available through the Google Play Store. We were able to download and install the 30.0.5.24 APK, and sure enough, the Smart shopping option appeared under Settings > Useful features > Smart shopping.

Samsung also calls out the feature directly in the update changelog, saying Smart shopping can recommend coupons from supported shopping sites. But availability may vary by country.

Interestingly, the finished implementation differs slightly from what we uncovered during our APK teardown. Earlier strings suggested Samsung planned to make Smart shopping opt-in. In version 30.0.5.24, however, the feature was enabled by default on our device. You can still switch it off at any time from the Useful features menu.

Samsung’s introductory pop-up explains that the browser automatically looks for coupons when you visit shopping sites. Recommendations can be based on the website you’re visiting, what’s in your shopping cart, and your country or region, which Samsung says it can determine from your device or network.

Our earlier teardown revealed more details about how that works. Samsung’s strings said Smart shopping may access the site you’re visiting, basket contents, and your IP address when you’re on participating retail sites to surface relevant coupons.

Version 30.0.5.24 also adds a new “Manage windows” menu to make handling multiple browser windows easier. For now, though, the bigger change is that Smart shopping has graduated from teardown discovery to something Samsung Browser users can actually start using in the wild.
