TL;DR
  • A report has suggested that Samsung has delayed the release of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9.
  • This is reportedly due to Samsung vice chairman Lee Jae-yong ordering that the glass on the device be 0.5mm thinner.
  • Samsung is still expected to unveil the Galaxy Note 9 comparatively early either at the end of July or the beginning of August.

Samsung has reportedly delayed the release of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 after vice chairman Lee Jae-yong ordered changes to the phone’s design. The orders came earlier in May, only months before the device’s expected release.

The Bell says that the reason for the delay is that Samsung wants to reduce the thickness of the glass that protects the OLED display by 0.5mm. Lee went on a trip to China to view Samsung’s competitors at the beginning of May and is said to have ordered the changes soon after. In the article, an official from within the component manufacturing industry is quoted as saying that Lee was especially taken by the hand-feel of OPPO and vivo devices that use Samsung displays.

Implementing the changes will reportedly delay the production of other parts by around two weeks. This delay is likely to be reflected in the device’s release date.

However, Note series fans shouldn’t be too disappointed as Samsung is still expected to unveil the device at the end of July or the beginning of August. That’s around a month earlier in the year than the release of the Galaxy Note 8.

While a 0.5mm change to the thickness of the device may not seem like much, it does make sense that Lee would want to avoid having other, potentially cheaper, devices feeling noticeably better.

Alongside the release info, the article also gave some extra details about the device itself. It suggested that the display of the Galaxy Note 9 will be 6.38-inches; around 0.06-inches larger than the Galaxy Note 8. It also said it will not include an in-display fingerprint sensor, something that fits in with previous rumors.
