TL;DR
  • Samsung Galaxy S21 series sales are reportedly 30% higher than the S20 series in Korea.
  • The base model accounted for 40% of sales, Samsung reportedly said.

Samsung’s Galaxy S21 series launched at a cheaper price than last year’s phones, with a starting price of $800 in the US for the base Galaxy S21 compared to $1000 for the base Galaxy S20 last year. The Galaxy S21 is cheaper in Korea too, starting at 999,900 won (~$903) compared to the base Galaxy S20’s 1.25 million won (~$1,130) price tag at launch. It looks like this strategy could be paying off big-time in the company’s home market.

Samsung was quoted as saying by Yonhap News that Galaxy S21 series sales are 30% higher than Galaxy S20 series sales. The growth was calculated based on sales from January 29 (the first day of availability) to February 8. Presumably the Korean manufacturer was comparing this to the Galaxy S20 range’s first few days of availability last year.

The base Galaxy S21 was the most popular model during this period, accounting for 40% of sales, followed by the Galaxy S21 Ultra with 36%. The S21 Plus therefore accounted for 24% of sales during this time.

It’s also interesting to note that Samsung said unlocked devices made up 30% of Galaxy S21 series sales in the market, with sales in this category more than doubling Galaxy S20 series sales in this regard.

This isn’t the only good news for Samsung’s new flagships in recent days, as pre-orders in the UK reportedly surpassed pre-orders for the Galaxy S10 range and S20 series. Between this news and Korean sales, it suggests that the S21 series might be a major success for the company.
